Considering the few democratic countries that embrace socialism in the world actually spread the wealth quite fairly and the numerous undemocratic countries that embrace capitalism are no better than the Soviet Union the way you imagine it, if you really wanted to see the truth it would be quite obvious.
Democracy and representative government determine the success of any system ultimately because if people have enough confidence in a system it generally works.
In Sweden people think about Karl Marx the same way people think of George Washington in the US. He is generally considered as a hero who saw all the human suffering caused by capitalists and decided to show people there was another way. They generally regard Soviet era Communism as a failed totalitarian state and genuinely believe people are stupid for not embracing socialism based solely on this example.
They would ask you realistically what chance do you ever have of becoming a millionaire. They would then ask you why you support all their privileges and the power they abuse. In their country there is no welfare class because there is no unemployment. During an economic crisis the taxes become extreme but as soon as the crisis abates they return to normal.
It's not a perfect system but they have just as much freedom as in the US in terms of choice. They laugh at poor people in the US on TV talking about how great their freedom is. They know they have more freedom than they can ever dream of because anybody who wants to go to university can get an education and the government pays for it, if you get sick you get world class medical care. Getting into prestigious courses like medicine is still competitive but doctors don't earn the ridiculous salaries they do in the US. It's enough for people to want to become doctors though!
The only thing they don't tolerate is greed. Children are taught in school how insane other countries are for encouraging people to be greedy and how they despise the poor. If you are poor in Sweden it's probably because you have a serious problem like drugs or alcoholism and the government funds programs to rehabilitate these people so they can fill all the jobs that are available! Some people are still homeless though. Some people just prefer a life on the streets strangely and they actually set up shelters where homeless people learn how to cooperate and take care of each other.
The government is always looking for new ways to improve other peoples lives because to them that's what socialism means. The left wing party puts pictures of Karl Marx on the front of their magazine proudly showing everybody what a hero Marx was for making their society a reality. They have a right wing party as well; over the past 60 or so years they have had 2 terms in office. People stopped voting for them when they realised that all they did was align with IMF recommendations and attempt to dismantle the institutions that make their society possible.
Swedes during the recession of the 70s had to pay 60% tax so its not cheap to run a society like this. So there are disadvantages. Being a millionare isn't as great either because all government fines are indexed to your income. A Swedish multi-millionaire got a $200,000 fine for not wearing a motor cycle helmet in a case that made headlines once because the fine is a percentage of your taxable income.
If you're actually scared of living in a society like this you don't have to worry because the US will never become like that. The Swedes started off as one of the poorest countries in Europe and started their effort towards social democracy before the aristocrats and business men took over the country. You can rely on the American aristocrats and business people to ensure the US never becomes a country like Sweden.
The Swedes believe under socialism everybody wins.
